City, county and state road crews prepping for incoming winter weather

While a major winter storm is expected to affect the Twin Lakes Area this week, multiple agencies are preparing to keep area roads as safe as possible. With the forecast calling for rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow, keeping roads in a drivable condition will require plenty of materials and man-hours.

Baxter County Judge Mickey Pendergrass says crews are ready to roll, once the rain changes over to freezing precipitation.

Mountain Home Street Department Director Arnold Knox says everyone there is ready to get to work, when the winter weather arrives.

Steve Lawrence is the district engineer for District 9 for the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT), which includes Baxter, Marion, Boone, Searcy and Newton counties. He says the department’s normal plan of pre-treating the highways in the area by putting down salt brine before the winter weather moves in doesn’t appear to be an option this time.

On the back side of the wintery precipitation, an arctic airmass will move in, bringing temperatures in the single digits and wind chills below zero. Because of that, Judge Pendergrass says the county is preparing a location to help folks who need a place to stay during the winter storm.
