Melbourne will be the third area high school girls’ basketball team playing for a state championship Friday in Hot Springs. The Lady Bearkatz are seeking their fourth consecutive title, and their opponent this year will be Bigelow.

Melbourne enters the game with a record of 34-0. The Lady Bearkatz, the champions of the Central Region, currently have a win streak stretching back from last year at 65 games.

Melbourne head coach Eric Teague says this year’s team didn’t really go into the season with high expectations. He says they just wanted to play basketball.

Bigelow is 23-4 on the year. This will be the second meeting between the Lady Bearkatz and the Lady Panthers. Melbourne defeated Bigelow 44-21 on March 1 for the regional title. Teague says Bigelow has a tough combination of size and length, and they are good passers.
