For the second consecutive season, the Melbourne High School football team will be kicking off the year with a new leader. Stu Smith takes over the reins as the new head coach of the Bearkatz, and they’ll begin the year on the home turf.

Smith inherits a team with high expectations. While Melbourne did not make the top five in Class 3A when the poll was released Monday by the Arkansas Sports Media, they did receive some votes from the panel. In this year’s issue of Hooten’s Arkansas Football Magazine, the Bearkatz were ranked ninth in all of Class 3A and picked by the coaches to finish second in the 3A-2 conference.

Smith says currently, the team needs to take the season one game at a time.
