On March 24, Baxter County will celebrate its Sesquicentennial, or 150th anniversary, at the Baxter County Courthouse in Mountain Home.

Baxter County Judge, Kevin Litty, is inviting all current and former county and city officials, along with citizens throughout the county, to join the inaugural celebration.

A meet-and-greet will begin at 2 on the courthouse’s second floor, proclamations will be read at 2:30 and the ceremony will conclude with a brief history of the county.

According to the Baxter County Historical and Genealogical Society, on March 24, 1873, Baxter County was formed from Fulton, Izard, Marion and Searcy Counties. The county was named in honor of the Governor of Arkansas at that time, Elisha Baxter, and formed as the 68th county in Arkansas, just prior to the Brooks-Baxter War.

The theme for the yearlong celebration is “150 years of pioneering and progress.” In honor of the 150th anniversary, more festivities will be announced throughout the year.
