Area unemployment numbers see big jump in January

The newly released unemployment numbers from the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services and the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center for the month of January show the number of unemployed has seen a big increase since December in northern Arkansas and southern Missouri.

In Baxter County, the rate is at 4.1%, up from 3% in the previous month. Baxter County’s rate is tied for the 36th lowest out of Arkansas’ 75 counties. There are 664 unemployed Baxter County residents out of a work force of 16,167.

Marion County’s rate rose from 3.2% in December to 4.8% in January, ranking it as tied for the 51st in the state. Marion County has 296 residents out of work from a work force of 6,180.

Fulton County’s unemployment rate rose from 2.6% in December to 4% in January which means they are tied for the 31st lowest rate in the state. Fulton County has a labor force of 4,910 and 198 unemployed.

The unemployment rate in Izard County went up from 4.5% in January to 5.9% in January which is tied for number 67 in Arkansas. There are 262 Izard County residents unemployed out of a work force of 4,411.

In Stone County, the January rate was 5.1%, up from 3.4% in January. That ranks Stone County tied for 56th out of 75 counties. There are 4,394 in the labor force in Stone County with 225 unemployed.

Searcy County’s unemployment rate rose from 3.7% to 5.9% in January, tying them for 67th in Arkansas. There are 162 people unemployed in Searcy County out of a work force of 2,761.

Boone County’s rate increased from 2.4% in December to 3.5% in January, putting them in a tie for the 13th lowest rate in the state. Boone County has a work force of 15,674 with 554 out of work.

Newton County is tied for the state’s 20th lowest unemployment rate at 3.7%, up from 2.3% last month. Newton County has a labor force of 3,138 with 117 of those unemployed.

Arkansas’s unemployed rate in January was 3.4%, down from 3.5% the previous month.

In southern Missouri, Ozark County’s rate stands at 4.8%, up from 3.3% in December. Ozark County has 157 unemployed out of a work force of 3,293.

Douglas County saw their rate go from 2.6% in December to 2.9% in January. In Douglas County, the labor force is 5,203 and there are 151 out of work.

Howell County had a increase, going from 2.8% to 3.3% in January. Howell County has work force of 15,911 with 521 unemployed.

Taney County’s rate increased from 3% in December to 9%. There are 2,175 unemployed in Taney County out of a labor force of 24,240.

Missouri’s rate went up from 2.4% last month to 2.8% in January.
