The West Plains Police Department is alerting the public of an increase of catalytic converter thefts within the city limits.According to a Facebook post by the West Plains Police, thefts are on the rise for catalytic converters in the area. Crimes are primarily taking place a local businesses and churches during the evening to early morning hours, however, they have also received reports of thefts at residences. Officials state repairs can amount to well over $2000.
Detectives ask those have become victim to these thefts, to complete the following steps.
1. Upon having the catalytic converter replaced, request the technician to retain both ends of the exhaust pipe so the pieces may be matched to a possibly recovered converter.
2. Request the repair technician to engrave the last “8” digits of the vehicle’s VIN number or the vehicle’s license plate number on the new catalytic converter.
3. Spray paint the current converter(s) with a high temperature paint. This will deter future sales of the converter.
4. Submit anonymous tips of persons suspected of committing these crimes or the illegal purchase of catalytic converters to CrimeTips@westplains.gov.
5. Report ANY suspicious activity to the West Plains Police Department by calling “911” or dialing 417-256-2244.
