A grant has been awarded to an area school district by the Arkansas Department of Education. The Izard County School District will receive an Arkansas 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant in the amount of $420,000.
According to the announcement from the district, the three-year grant is designed to support community learning centers providing enrichment during non-school hours in the areas of reading, literacy, math and science. It will reportedly help supplement the summer and after school programs the district currently has in place for kindergarten through eighth grades and allow the district to provide a Before School Program.
The grant was written by Izard County Elementary Principal Eve Hatman, Middle School Principal Sarah Burns and STEM Coordinator Courtney Selph. Superintendent Fred Walker says, “We are pleased to receive this much needed grant. It will help us to supplement and expand our present program and I can’t thank Eve, Sarah, and Courtney enough for working hard to help us to be selected for this highly competitive grant. This program helps us further our STEM initiative and is just another way we put our students first.”
