Man dead after attempt to rescue child from drowning

A man is dead after attempting to rescue a child from drowning in Batesville. The 47-year-old man’s identity is being withheld until his next of kin is notified.

According to a report from KAIT, the Batesville Police Department states a child fell into White River Friday afternoon, and the man went after him but never resurfaced. The unidentified male was located nearly an hour later, and another man pulled the child to safety.

Authorities say the victim and child were both transported to White River Health in Batesville. The Batesville Police Department was assisted on the scene by Vital Link EMS, the Independence County Sheriff’s Office and the Batesville Fire Department.

Sheriff Shawn Stephens says the child is doing okay.
