Izard Co. man facing felony assault charges

An Izard County man is facing multiple assault charges after an domestic dispute.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on July 23rd, the Izard County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a domestic disturbance in progress. Dispatch informed officers a female had locked herself in the residence and the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Gregory Ward, was trying to get in.

Upon arrival, deputies were able to locate the victim in the attic but could not find Ward. After speaking with the victim and her guardian, they stated the victim was adjudicated as an incapacitated person in probate court in 2018, with her guardians appointed of her person and estate. The victim’s guardian states the victim informed her Ward, the victim’s boyfriend, was going to kill her. The guardian instructed the victim to go to her parent’s house across the street, hide and call 911.

The victim told authorities Ward had allegedly struck her several times, causing injuries. In addition, she said Ward strangled her. Deputies observed the victim to have swelling on her forehead and right eyebrow, along with cuts on the corner of her lip and left leg.

During a police interview the following day, the victim told investigators Ward accused her of being attracted to one of his friends when he became violent, striking her in the face. She alleged Ward would attempt to strangle her multiple times, restricting her airflow. The victim told authorities she was frightened of Ward.

When investigators asked how she escaped, she stated Ward calmed down when she told him she did not want anyone else and only loved him. Ward allegedly calmed down temporarily before getting agitated she was leaving.

Ward is facing felony charges of abuse of an endangered or impaired person, aggravated assault on a family or household member and a misdemeanor count of third-degree domestic battering. He is currently being held in the Izard County Detention Center on $50,000 bond.
