Two Douglas Co. inmates receive additional assault charges

Two female inmates in the Douglas County Jail are facing additional felony charges after assaulting another inmate.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, on July 24, a female inmate was observed to have a swollen lip and redness near here left eye. Another inmate, identified as 32-year-old Courtney Melton, was observed with a bleeding finger. Melton stated the other inmate had bit her.

After reviewing footage, deputies observed Melton and the inmate both talking on the phone when the she attempted to stop Melton from enter in her pin number, but did not make contact. Melton was seen pushing the inmate, hitting her in the face with the phone and slamming her head into the wall. Melton was then observed pushing the inmate to the floor, punching her in the face and head.

Another female inmate, 20-year-old Kirsten Johnson, was seen on video holding the inmate’s leg to prevent her from protecting herself and was encouraging Melton to continue the fight. Johnson was observed grabbing the inmate’s arms and legs to prevent her from fighting back. Deputies were able to diffuse the altercation.

Melton and Johnson face one felony count of first-degree domestic assault. Both remain in custody with an additional $1500 cash only bond.
