A registered sex offender detained for being late in his verification process was allegedly discovered with methamphetamine. Fifty-seven-year-old Calvin McDonald of Wideman is in the Izard County Detention Center facing two felony counts of failure to comply with registration and reporting requirements, one felony count of possession of methamphetamine and an enhancement as a habitual offender.

According to the probable cause affidavit, an Izard County investigator met with McDonald, a Level 3 offender, at the sheriff’s office Aug. 22. The investigator noted in February, McDonald signed the Sex Offender Acknowledgement Form requiring him to verify his residency on Aug. 10.

When the investigator pointed out he was late to verify the residence, McDonald reportedly said the process was “like certified mail. You’ve got 10 days to respond.” The investigator pointed out 12 days had passed since the due date and took McDonald into custody. During a search, a clear baggie containing a white crystalline substance was reportedly located in McDonald’s wallet, and it later field tested positive for methamphetamine.

In addition, a smartphone seized from McDonald was also determined not to have been registered. The investigator noted he is required to register all computers or other devices with internet capability that he can access.

McDonald’s bond is set at $20,000.
