The Mountain Home High School football team came up just short in attempting to get its first conference win of the season. A couple of miscues and a Lake Hamilton touchdown near the end of the game pushed the Wolves past the Bombers 44-38.
Lake Hamilton ended the first half with a 20-10 advantage. Mountain Home’s opening drive of the second half ended with a five-yard touchdown run to cut the margin to three. Kelso Haught squibbed the ensuing kickoff, the Wolves mishandled the ball, and the Bombers recovered it at the Lake Hamilton 40. A few plays later, Mountain Home took their first lead of the night, and the game went back and forth from there.
With the Bombers up 38-34, the Wolves threatened to score, but Mountain Home forced a turnover on downs at the 1-yard line with just over two minutes left. However, two plays later, the ball was snapped over Bomber quarterback Cade Yates’ head and into the back of the end zone, and Lake Hamilton was credited with a safety.
With a two-point deficit and 31 seconds left, the Wolves were facing a fourth down at the Mountain Home 38, but they completed a pass play to the 1 to keep the drive alive and punched it in the end zone on the very next play to secure the win.
Yates was 15 of 26 through the air for the Bombers for 174 yards and two touchdowns, and Chris Hubbard had 12 carries for 136 yards and two additional scores. For Lake Hamilton, Easton Hurley completed 10 passes out of 16 attempts for 151 yards and two touchdowns, and Hayden Barton had 26 rushes for 134 yards and a score.
Mountain Home falls to 2-2 on the season and 0-2 in the 6A-West. The Wolves improve to 2-2 and 1-1.
The Bombers will return home next week for an outing with Russellville.
