Two men have been arrested in separate sting operations at an area retailer when they allegedly thought they were meeting up with minors. According to KYTV/KSPR, 32-year-old William Travis and 44-year-old Troy Mayfield are both in the Douglas County Jail with bond for each set at $50,000.
Ava Police Department investigators say a member of the Alliance Against Childhood Exploitation (ACE) informed the department they were in contact with Travis via an app. The group reportedly pretended to be a 15-year-old girl and began messaging Travis. Travis allegedly engaged in explicit conversations with the person who he thought was the girl. Travis and the “girl” decided to meet Sept. 16 at the retail store in Ava with another juvenile, who was 16 years old. Members of ACE and Ava officers made contact with Travis and arrested him in the store.
Travis is charged with two counts of second-degree attempted statutory rape, two counts of attempted statutory sodomy and first-degree sexual misconduct.
ACE reportedly contacted the Ava Police Department again Sept. 17 and said a man going by the name of “Russell” was messaging a 14-year-old female. “Russell” mentioned he was 36 and said she was too young for him. However, he allegedly asked how old another female acquaintance was, and she said the other female was 18. They then messaged about having the 18-year-old meet the male at the same retail store in Ava. Members of ACE and Ava officers spotted “Russell,” later identified as Mayfield, in the store and arrested him.
Mayfield is charged with second-degree attempted statutory rape, second-degree attempted statutory sodomy and second-degree sexual misconduct.
