It’s not every day someone receives a key to the city, but one was handed out Thursday night at the Mountain Home City Council meeting. Vincent “Adam” Kahnke, the commander of the new USS Arkansas nuclear powered attack submarine of the U.S. Navy, along with several crew members, were presented with a key to the city of Mountain Home at the beginning of the meeting.
The USS Arkansas has adopted the Mountain Home High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp as official partners of the submarine for the life of the ship. The MHNJROTC is acting as a liaison between the ship and the state of Arkansas during the inaugural namesake visit to the state.
In other business, the Mountain Home City Council approved two ordinances. One specifies the type of cement to be used when pouring thrust blocks for underground piping serving sprinkler systems and standpipe systems. The other ordinance addresses fire department connections for sprinkler systems or standpipe systems and setting a maximum distance from the nearest fire hydrant for such fixtures.
The council also heard the first reading of an ordinance amending a 2003 ordinance which regulates the retail selling, manufacture, shooting or discharging of fireworks within the city limits. The ordinance, according to Fire Marshal Shawn Lofton, would make it easier to regulate firework stands.
