In a recent ceremony, Calico Rock High School (CRHS) inducted long-time educator, Mark Green, into the Hall of Honor on Oct. 13 during the annual Black and Orange Games.Over the years, Green taught junior high English, 11th grade English, Journalism and Study Skills. In 1993, he became the high school Library Media Specialist. During his time at CRHS, Green had the biggest impact on the relationship he built with his students and the extracurricular activities he sponsored.
Green organized and sponsored Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and established the first Grad Nite dances at CRHS, a tradition he continued for over two decades. He coached several Izard County Spelling Bee winners. He worked closely with the Calico Rock FFA Show Team and served several terms as president of the FFA Alumni Booster Club. As one of the coaches of Academic Quiz Bowl, his 1990 Quiz Bowl team was the State Runners-Up. In addition, Green wrote the grants to finance the Very Important Pirate student recognition program.
During his tenure, Green was nominated by his students and named to the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers nine times. Along with being selected for the KAIT-TV Region 8 Golden Ruler Teacher, recognized as an Outstanding Educator at Arkansas Governor’s School and in 2002, was named a National Semifinalist for the Walt Disney Great American Teacher award.
For 24 years, Green designed and led homecoming activities, including one from a hospital bed. He was also involved with the planning and design of the new high school campus.
Green graduated as Valedictorian from Big Flat High School in 1980. He earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree at the University of Central Arkansas where he was a Presidential Scholar and a member of Gamma Beta Phi and Kappa Pi Honor Societies. When he graduated from college, English teaching jobs were scarce in the area. Green accepted the junior high English position became open two weeks after school started in the Fall of 1986.
