Seven area schools are among 163 in Arkansas to receive funds based on test scores and/or higher graduation rates. The Arkansas School Recognition Program was created to provide financial awards to public schools that experience high student performance, student academic growth, and for secondary schools, high graduation rate.

Schools receive up to $100 per student who attends a school in the top 5% of state mandated tests or in the top 5% of schools showing improvement in test scores and/or graduation rates. A sum of $50 per student is given to schools that are in the 6-10% range.

No area schools are in the top 5% based on test scores, but four were in the 6-10% category. Harrison Middle School received $41,600, Valley Springs Elementary School got $16,150, Valley Springs Middle School received $11,600 and Rural Special High School got $4,200.

Two area schools are listed in the group of schools in the top 5% showing increase in test scores and/or graduation rates. Jasper High School received $20,500 and Rural Special High School got $8,400.

Three schools are listed in the 6-10% increase in test scores and/or graduation rates. Melbourne High School received $19,400, Valley Springs Elementary got $16,150 and Izard County High School received $9,650.

The funds must be spent in three ways:

– Nonrecurring faculty or staff bonuses.

– Nonrecurring expenditures for educational equipment or materials to assist in maintaining or improving student performance.

– Temporary personnel for the school to assist in maintaining and improving student performance.
