Through the month of November, the Baxter County Library is celebrating the senses and literary exploration with a variety of events and exhibits.

Monday evening at 5, “Dessert in the Dark” provides an opportunity to explore the sense of taste and smell by limiting the sense of sight. Participants will be blindfolded in a darkened room while sampling desserts provided by local restaurants, including Bookworms Cafe, Petite Patisserie and Rapp’s Barren Brewing Company. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the Circulation Desk.

Tuesday morning at 10:30, Arkansas author, Brian Thompson will be visiting the Library to share his journey and book, Blind Man Walking. The story follows two old college friends who contemplate hiking the Appalachian Trail with a twist as one is severely vision impaired, raising questions about his ability to hike the trail.

The exhibit, “Child In a Strange Country,” is currently on display through Nov. 25. This exhibit takes a look at the history of education for the blind and visually impaired, with a focus on the life of Helen Keller. The exhibit is open to the public during regular library hours. Tours of the “Child in a Strange Country” for schools and organization can be scheduled by contacting Vincent Anderson at vincent.a@baxlib.org.

On Nov. 18, the Library will host a Family Fun Day starting at 10:00 in the morning. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about Helen Keller and the history of education for the blind and visually impaired as well as engage with hands-on materials used in education, make a Braille bookmark and discover how to overcome communication barriers.
