More than a year after a potential buyer came into the area with the intention of purchasing the former NABORS landfill and its location on Rossi Road in Mountain Home, the contract for the acquisition has been terminated. The attorney for the Ozark Mountain Solid Waste District presented its board with a termination agreement signed by Lakeshore Recycling Systems, and it was quickly approved with a unanimous vote Tuesday during the board meeting.

Documents obtained last year by KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot news identified LRS, a Delaware-based company, as the potential buyer. No reason was given for the company to draw up the contract. Mountain Home Mayor Hillrey Adams serves on the board, and he says they were prepared to bring the discussion back during the meeting.

The proposed sale and reopening of the landfill was met with criticism of several local entities. Mayor Adams says the possibility of another contractor coming in to purchase the landfill cannot be ruled out, but state law now says such a purchase would also require to repay the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality’s closure fee.

The Mountain Home mayor adds he can’t speak for everyone, but he was relieved to have the issue resolved, and he knows others were, too.
