The Food Bank of North Central Arkansas recently announced the 10,000th graduate of their Move Up 2 Independence Initiative.

The initiative, which started just over a decade ago, focuses on shortening the line of individuals in need across north central Arkansas through educational opportunities including Cooking Matters, Cooking Matters at the Store, Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World, Bridges Out of Poverty and Poverty Simulations. These courses are aimed at teaching individuals how to shop and cook nutritiously on a budget, basic life skills, and assists community leaders in gaining a better understanding of what it’s like to struggle with hunger and poverty.

The initiative grew out of a community-wide effort funded by the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation and led by Arkansas State University in Mountain Home. The evidence-based classes come from the national and international efforts of Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign and Ruby K. Payne’s Bridges Out of Poverty curriculum.

The Food Bank also announced plans in place to provide continued learning opportunities with Guy Berry College and Career Academy, Reppell Diabetes Center, Good Samaritan, Mountain Home Junior High and Flippin High School during the spring of 2024.
