An online publication claiming to educate the world to better care for the planet and the species occupying it has released an article ranking the eight coldest locations in Arkansas. The list announced by A-Z Animals, based on an analysis of average temperature trends in the state, utilizing data generated by the National Centers for Environmental Information, includes six areas of north central Arkansas.
Baxter County is considered the eighth-coldest place in the Natural State. With elevations ranging from 800 to 1,400 feet, the average low temperature in the county during the month of January is around 19 degrees.
Newton County is at No. 6 with elevations ranging from 700 to over 2000 feet. According to A-Z Animals, the county hosts a mountainous terrain responsible for its cold surges, especially during winter. Temperatures in January may range from about 25 to 43 degrees.
Marion County is ranked fifth among the coldest places in Arkansas. Its diverse topography, featuring mountainous regions in the north and major waterways including the Buffalo National River, the White River and Crooked Creek, reportedly plays a role in shaping the climate of the region. Temperature averages for January range from 21 to 46 degrees, but snowfall in the region remains relatively light compared to other parts of the state.
No. 4 on the list is Fulton County, where winters can be chilly and wet. Its colder temperatures can be attributed to its northerly position at the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. The average low temperature in the coldest month of January is around 25 degrees. Snowfall in the region is rare, and most years, it only receives one or two inches. The highest record in Fulton County was in February 1993, when a heavy snowfall buried Salem under 13 inches.
Boone County comes in at No. 2. Winter weather averages in the coldest month of January is around 9 degrees, and the county experiences reportedly some of the heaviest snowfalls. On March 9, 1994, Boone County recorded as much as 18 inches of snow over just 24 hours.
A-Z Animals has the Searcy County town of Gilbert as the state’s coldest location. The town, nestled along the banks of the Buffalo National River, experiences an average low of 23 degrees in January. Gilbert’s unique cold weather is attributed to its location in the Ozark Mountains.
Two areas of northwest Arkansas are also on the list. Benton County is ranked third, and Carroll County comes in at No. 7.
