Four area high school basketball teams went to Swifton on Saturday to play their openers in the Kell Classic.
Calico Rock’s girls were one and done in the tournament. The Lady Pirates fell to Pocahontas by a final score of 50-27.
The Mammoth Spring girls were victorious one day after Brynn Washam reached the 2,000-point milestone for her career. The top-seeded Lady Bears invoked the mercy rule as they routed Tuckerman 67-24. Adrianna Corbett led Mammoth Spring with 26 points, Molly Corbett scored 13, and Tay Davis added 12. The Lady Bears will advance to play Marmaduke in Wednesday’s semifinals.
Mammoth Spring did not fare as well on the boys’ side as they ended up getting eliminated by Tuckerman 67-42. The Bears were led by Garet O’Dell with 17 points.
In the other boys’ game, Izard County moved on to the semifinals with an easy 72-47 win over another group of Cougars from Rector. Jude Everett was Izard County’s top scorer with 31 points, Gabe Spray had 15, and Keaton Melton chipped in 12. Izard County improves to 11-6 on the season.
Elsewhere, Bergman’s boys ended suffering their third straight defeat. The Panthers went to Wilson and were edged out by Rivercrest 61-60.
Harrison had mixed results as they made up their 5A-West openers with Alma. The Lady Goblins put the mercy rule in effect as they pounded the Lady Airedales 61-30. The boys’ contest had a different result as Harrison fell to Alma 59-48.
