Mountain Home High School (MHHS) NJROTC Cadet Lieutenant Commander Makaela Broad received the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Outstanding Achievement in the Reserve Officer Training Corps. The award was presented to Cadet Broad last Thursday by MHHS Principal Mary Beth Russell in recognition of her outstanding performance and leadership within the Navy JROTC Program.

As a senior at Mountain Home High School, Cadet Broad currently serves as the Cadet Company Commander for Bravo Company. Her dedication to the program is evident through her previous roles as Battalion Operations and Company Maintenance Officer, demonstrating a consistent commitment to excellence.

A standout participant in the Bomber Battalion’s competitive teams, Cadet Broad has contributed to Armed Regulation, Unarmed Regulation, Color Guard, Physical Fitness, and Academic teams. Early last year, with the Unarmed Regulation team down a cadet, Cadet Broad stepped into formation at the last minute, just before the team was marching out to compete. Later in the drill season, she became the guidon for both Armed and Unarmed Regulation Teams for the Area 9 Championship. She led her team to 1st place numerous times in her tenure as the Academic Team Commander. Her willingness to take initiative and her commitment to her teams makes her an invaluable asset to the Bomber Battalion.

Cadet Broad has actively contributed to the unit since joining NJROTC in 2021. Her accolades include being awarded Cadet of the Year in her first year in the Battalion. In addition to her leadership within the program, Cadet Broad is actively engaged in community service and sports. Notably, she has been selected as the 2023-2024 Swim Team Captain.

During the summer of 2023, Cadet Broad attended the Basic Leadership Training/Leadership Academy Camp, where her leadership skills were recognized with a Challenge Coin presented by Senior Chief Petty Officer Troy Peel for being the best cadet in BRAVO Company.

Despite her numerous commitments, Cadet Broad maintains a 3.93 GPA, placing her in the top 13% of her class. Her commitment to the unit, coupled with her outstanding academic achievements and community involvement, solidify Cadet Makaela Broad’s position as an invaluable asset to the Mountain Home High School Navy JROTC Program.
