Second arrest made involving unemployment benefits fraud

A second arrest has been made involving unemployment benefits fraud.

According to Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery, 53-year-old Shannon Jamal Porter of Gassville has be arrested and charged with theft of public benefits following a criminal referral from Arkansas Workforce Services.

Porter allegedly applied for and obtained unemployment benefits while working at a Mountain Home Supermarket during a period from January 20, 2021 through April 17, 2021. He received a total of $5,352 in unemployment benefits from the public treasury which he was not entitled to receive legally. With penalties and interest, Porter owes the public treasury $8,098 in restitution.

Porter was arrested Friday in Gassville and in currently being held in the Baxter County Detention Center on a felony charge of theft of public benefits with a habitual offender enhancement. He is being held on a $15,000 bond.
