Authorities recently had to address an alleged threat made to an area school district. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the FBI during the overnight hours on Thursday regarding the threatening message toward the Ava R-I School District posted by a student on a social media platform.
According to Sheriff Chris Degase, the message was reported to the FBI from the platform, which was provided to his office along with the identifiers of the person that posted it. A Douglas County investigator located subject. After the subject was interviewed by the investigator, a school resource officer and the Children’s Division, it was reportedly determined there was no planning or intent to carry out the threat, and the message was only posted in a moment of anger and emotions.
The sheriff’s office has been in contact with Ava Superintendent Aaron Dalton regarding this matter, and the school is now taking actions regarding school policies. Dalton said in a statement, “We appreciate the swift and thorough action of our local law enforcement in investigating this matter. All reports of this nature are taken seriously and investigated fully to ensure the safety of our students. The safety of our students and staff remains our number one priority.”
A report regarding the incident is being forwarded to the juvenile authorities.
