A late night fire has destroyed the old school gym in Salem. Salem Volunteer Fire Department Chief Sam Rissitto says no injuries were reported following the blaze Tuesday night.

The chief says the call came in at 10:13 and when the first fighters arrived five minutes later, roughly three-quarters of the interior of the building was already fully involved. He says at the point, all they could do was prevent the fire from spreading to nearby residences and three RVs and a truck parked nearby.

The gym, which was being renovated into apartments, had several people living inside who all escaped unharmed.

Chief Rissitto says the old structure was built with a lot of wood which meant there was lot of fuel for the fire. The Salem, Sturkie and Morriston fire departments spent just over four hours battling the blaze.

The old Salem gym was located next to the old school at 219 N. Oak Street in downtown Salem.
