MHHS basketball teams get swept at Russellville

The Mountain Home High School basketball teams wrapped up the first half of conference play on a rough note as they were swept at Russellville. Matt Sharp has the details.

The evening began with the Lady Bombers falling to the Lady Cyclones 72-43. This was a game of teams ranked by the Arkansas Sports Media. Mountain Home is No. 1 in Class 5A and sixth in the state overall, and Russellville is fourth in Class 5A, but the Lady Cyclones dominated the game from start to finish. Brenna Burk came out firing as she scored 20 of Russellville’s 24 points in the first quarter, and the Lady Bombers were only able to hit one field goal in the period. While Burk was a little more quiet the rest of the game, others picked up the slack as they Lady Cyclones hit 11 three-pointers on their way to a 29-point win.

Laykin Moore led Mountain Home with 16 points. Burk scored 27 for Russellville, and Saraya Stroud added 11.

The Lady Bombers and Lady Cyclones are now part of a three-way tie for first place in the 5A-West with Greenwood. Mountain Home falls to 17-6 on the season and 6-1 in the league. Russellville improves to 16-5 and 6-1.

The Bomber boys wrapped up the evening with a 46-41 loss to the Cyclones. In the first half, Ryder McClain picked up where he left off at Alma on Friday by hitting four shots from the arc and scoring 14 points. Mountain Home had built a 10-point lead nearly halfway through the third quarter, but the tide turned from their as their next five possessions resulted in four turnovers and an airball. Russellville, currently ranked second in Class 5A and eighth overall by the Arkansas Sports Media, took the lead in the final period and would not relinquish it as they went on to win by five.

The Bombers were led by McClain with 16 points. Cade Smith had 12 points for the Cyclones, and Caleb Campbell and Cam Frazier each chipped in 10.

Mountain Home is now tied for fourth place in the 5A-West with Harrison as they drop to 16-7 overall and 4-3 in the conference. Russellville moves into a tie for second with Van Buren as they improve to 20-3 and 5-2.

The Bomber teams begin the second half of their conference slate on Friday with a trip to Siloam Springs.

In other 5A-West boys’ action, Harrison routed Greenwood 68-37, and Alma squeaked by Van Buren 60-58. On the girls’ side, Harrison lost to Greenwood 78-42, and Van Buren pounded Alma 53-25.
