The first month of 2024 ended up being among the top 10 among the Twin Lakes Area’s wettest Januarys. The only day of measurable snowfall also put the area above average for the month, and four daily records were either broken or tied in January.
At KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot, the official reporting station for the National Weather Service in Mountain Home, a total of 6.38 inches of precipitation was recorded during the previous month, making it the sixth-wettest January on record. The wettest January was in 1949 when 8.8 inches of precipitation were recorded. The month was also 3.08 inches above its average rainfall of 3.3 inches.
One daily rainfall record was broken last month. On the morning of Jan. 9, 1.46 inches of rain were measured, passing the day’s previous mark of 1.27 inches in 1987.
Six days later, 4 1/2 inches of snow were recorded at the studios. That tripled the previous record for Jan. 15 of 1 1/2 inches. There was another day of snowfall on the afternoon of Jan. 5, but it wasn’t able to stick to the ground to come away with a measurement. The total snow for the month was 2.6 inches above January’s average snowfall of 1.9 inches.
In addition to the snow, there was another record that was tied on Jan. 15. For the second time, the low temperature that morning was -2 degrees, equaling the day’s previous mark set in 1979. The low for the next day was -1, tying the previous record for Jan. 16 in 2018.
The warmest temperature recorded last month was 63 on Jan. 31. The average high for January was 39.6 degrees, and the average low was 22.4.
