Ava man charged in the 2017 murder case of Lance Terrill

An Ava man has been indicted for the 2017 murder of Lance Terrill.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Facebook page, on Jan. 30, a Douglas County Grand Jury indicted 28-year-old Howard J. Applegate of Ava for the 2017 murder of Terrill which occurred along Missouri Highway Z in Douglas County.

At the time of his indictment, Applegate was currently being held in Douglas County Jail on multiple felony charges of assault and burglary with a $50,000 cash only bond. At the time of his arrest, Applegate was on probation out of Webster County for possession of a controlled substance.

Douglas County Sheriff Chris Degase says the case has been lengthy and the investigation lasted for six years. Sheriff Degase says his department would like to thank the Christian County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Webster County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in the investigation.

Applegate was indicted for felony charges of first degree murder, armed criminal action, three counts of unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of concealing a felony.
