The Mountain Home High School basketball teams wrapped up their home stand in rough fashion as they were swept Tuesday by Russellville. Matt Sharp has the details.
Listen:
The Lady Bombers’ comeback fell short as they fell to the Lady Cyclones 65-61. Russellville’s Brenna Burk picked up where she left off in the first meeting between the two teams as she hit five three-pointers in the first half. Mountain Home was able to keep the game manageable as they relied mostly on layups and went into the locker room down seven. The Lady Cyclones expanded their lead to double digits and kept it that way for much of the second half. However, they struggled at the free throw line, with the exception of Taleigha Ealy, and that allowed Mountain Home to come back. The Lady Bombers ran out of time, though, as the Lady Cyclones held on for the four-point win.
Jayla Yonkers led Mountain Home with 22 points, Laykin Moore scored 14, and Anna McCarn added 10. Burk had 28 points for Russellville, Ealy provided 14, and Dru Robinson chipped in 12.
The two teams are now tied for second place in the 5A-West. The Lady Bombers fall to 20-7 on the season and 9-2 in the league. The Lady Cyclones improve to 19-6 and 9-2.
The night wasn’t any better for Mountain Home’s boys as they lost to Russellville 52-40. The game was close early on as the Bombers and Cyclones ended the opening quarter tied at 15. Russellville started inching away from there as Mountain Home committed 15 turnovers on the night and gave up several offensive rebounds. The Cyclones found ways to halt the Bombers’ runs late in the game as they went on to win by a dozen.
Mountain Home was led by Blaine Tate with 15 points, and Braiden Dewey finished with 14. For Russellville, Donavon Villareal ended up with 15 points, and Caleb Campbell scored 14.
The two teams went into the game tied in the standings. The Cyclones now hold sole possession of third place in the conference as they are at 22-5 overall and 7-4 in the 5A-West. The Bombers are fourth as they drop to 18-9 and 6-5.
Mountain Home will have the first of two straight road trips on Friday as they travel to Greenwood.
In other 5A-West boys’ action, Harrison was edged out by Greenbrier 44-41, Siloam Springs got past Greenwood 55-49, and Van Buren defeated Alma 59-47. On the girls’ side, Harrison fell to Greenbrier 49-47, Greenwood routed Siloam Springs 85-25, and Alma topped Van Buren 53-48.
