State tournaments begin this week for high school basketball in Arkansas, and a total of 17 area teams will be competing.
Both of Mountain Home’s teams will be paired with Benton in the Class 5A State Tournament at Searcy. The boys’ game will be Tuesday, and the girls’ contest is set for Thursday.
The Bomber boys are currently 20-10 after finishing tied for third place in the 5A-West, but they came away with the No. 4 seed after Russellville won the tiebreaker. The Panthers are the 5A-South conference champions with a record of 26-4. Tuesday’s game is scheduled for 2:30.
Mountain Home’s girls bring a record of 22-8 into the tournament after finishing third in the 5A-West. Benton is the runner-up of the 5A-South with a mark of 16-11. Thursday’s game is set for 4.
Four area teams will compete in the Class 2A State Tournament. On the girls’ side, Cotter meets Parkers Chapel Wednesday at 7, Marshall faces Buffalo Island Central Thursday at 1, and Izard County takes on Earle Thursday at 4. The Marshall boys play Riverside Thursday at 2:30.
Omaha is the designated host school of the Class 1A State Tournament, and six area teams will take part on the south campus of North Arkansas College in Harrison. On the girls’ bracket, Norfork will be matched up with Alpena Tuesday at 7, Mammoth Spring meets Jasper Wednesday at 4, and Omaha faces Concord Wednesday at 7. In boys’ action, Jasper takes on Marked Tree Tuesday at 8:30, and Rural Special plays County Line Wednesday at 2:30.
Five area teams will compete in the Class 3A State Tournament at Elkins. On the girls’ side, Bergman goes up against Dover Tuesday at 4, Salem and Drew Central tip off Wednesday at 1, Mountain View meets Jessieville Wednesday at 7, and Valley Springs faces Lamar Thursday at 4. Bergman’s boys take on LISA Academy North Tuesday at 5:30.
