Severe Weather Awareness Week began Sunday in Arkansas and will continue through Saturday. The National Weather Service Office in North Little Rock is using the event to increase public awareness about the dangers of severe weather and encourage people to take steps to protect themselves and their property.

One of the first topics the National Weather Service is covering this week is flooding and the dangers of driving on roadways with standing water. One thing that can be spotted throughout portions of the Twin Lakes Area is a number of low-water crossings. Meteorologist Dylan Cooper says motorists will sometimes drive on a crossing with water on it believing they can make it to the other side, and it’s a choice that can potentially be fatal.

North central Arkansas and southern Missouri has also seen its share of severe thunderstorms, and some of the dangers have included lightning and straight line winds. Cooper says another danger that’s common in the Twin Lakes Area is the threat of hail.

The area is also in a region that can be known for producing tornadoes. Cooper says when a warning is issued, the best thing someone can is stay inside a sturdy structue and away from windows.
