The Springdale Bulldog Invitational was held Saturday by the Arkansas High School Powerlifting Association, and one local student-athlete was able to break a state record. Cotter High School senior Brooks Cheek set the mark for bench pressing in the 275-pound weight class when he lifted 310 pounds, and that helped him win his division.
Cheek says he was gleaming when he realized he became the new record holder, but he was expecting to get it done.
Listen:
Cheek beat out four others in his weight class after lifting a total of 1,225 pounds. He also lifted 415 pounds in the squat and dead lifted 500 pounds.
High school powerlifting is a somewhat new sport in Arkansas that not everyone is familiar with. Cheek says he had known about the Arkansas High School Powerlifting Association for a little while, and he just recently got involved in competition.

Cheek says he will be going to Monticello on March 9 for the Arkansas High School Powerlifting Association State Championship.
