ASUMH hands Conners State 1st baseball loss of 2024

The ASU-Mountain Home baseball team’s game against Conners State on Monday was a high-scoring affair. The Trailblazers were able to hand the Cowboys their first loss of the season with a 16-14 decision.

ASU-Mountain Home got the scoring started in the top of the first inning with an RBI double by Alex Harrell. Conners State responded in the bottom half with an RBI double and two more runs being scored on an error. The Cowboys added to their lead in the second inning off a pair of RBI base hits by Teonis Pimentel and Blake Simpson, and another run was scored when David Stanley hit into a double play.

Conners State made the score 7-1 in the third off an RBI double by Joseph Guttierez. The Blazers broke their scoring drought in the fourth of a two-run home run by Harrell over the left field fience, and they cut the margin to one on a three-run fifth inning. Wally Diaz added to the Conners State lead in the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot.

ASU-Mountain Home tied the game up in the seventh in part due to another home run by Harrell and a pair of RBI singles by Tristan Wheelus and Logen Walker. The Cowboys broke up the tie later in that inning with an RBI single by Gutierrez and a sacrifice fly by JT Melson.

The Blazers knotted the game back up in the top of the eighth off a two-run single by Jason Young. After Conners State went back on top off a two-run single by Diaz, ASU-Mountain Home went up for good in the ninth off an RBI double by Sammy Lemond, a passed ball, and a pair of RBI base hits by Jackson Down and Young.

Coleton Payton pitched five relief innings for the Blazers, struck out two batters and gave up six hits and one walk. He also allowed six runs, and three were earned. Ckyler Tengler was the starting pitcher as he went one inning and recorded one strikeout, five hits and two walks. Tengler gave up six runs, and three were earned.

ASU-Mountain Home had 22 hits on the day, compared to 16 for the Cowboys. Young was 4-for-6 with four RBIs; Harrell had four hits and two stolen bases; and Down, Lemond, Christopher Tillery and Gabriel Ellison each had multiple base hits.

The Blazers improve to 13-4 on the season, and they’ll travel to Camden on Thursday to meet Southern Arkansas Tech.
