Primary election results include 2 Marion County JPs getting beat

Tuesday’s local primary election results saw a number of incumbents losing their seats, including three in Marion County.

MARION COUNTY

Current Marion County District 6 Justice of the Peace Rolin Hutching ended up getting beat by Leslie Kerwood in the Republican primary. Kerwood had 161 votes for 56% and will join the quorum court next year with no opponent in November. Hutching had 128 votes for 44%.

Tommy Dean Johnson will become District 9’s new JP with his win over incumbent Christopher Carter and no opposition in the general election. Johnson secured 163 votes for 53% of the tally, and Carter had 145 votes for 47%.

Marion Wesley Shipman will keep his seat for Marion County’s District 7. Shipman had 205 votes for 67%, and challenger Phyllis Graham ended up with 100 votes for 33%. Shipman will be unopposed in November.

The Ozark Mountain School Board’s president was defeated in the Zone 6 race. Challenger Jason Smith finished with 73 votes for 54%, beating incumbent Jesse B. Rose with 62 votes at 46%.

FULTON COUNTY

Ray Matthew was one of two Fulton County justices of the peace to lose his seat on the quorum court in the Republican primary. Gary Tanner had 131 votes for 74% in the District 7 race, beating out Matthew with 46 votes at 26%.

District 9 JP Carrie Andrew lost her race by one vote. Hank Burke had 56 votes for 50.5% to defeat Andrew with 55 votes at 49.5%.

District 3 JP Al Roork will keep his seat on the quorum court. Roork’s 105 votes for 63% beat out John M. Jarman with 61 votes at 37%.

Jimmy Marler will stay on the quorum court for District 8 with 128 votes for 63%. Challenger Jackie Privett had 75 votes for 37%.

All four winners in Fulton County will be unopposed in the general election.

IZARD COUNTY

One Republican primary on the Izard County Quorum Court will require a runoff. All of Izard County’s winners will go into the November election unopposed.

Incumbent Michael Cone will square off against Quillen P. Edwards on April 2 for District 7. Cone had 43 votes for 45%, and Edwards finished with 34 votes for 36%. Gary Michael Morrison Jr. was third with 18 votes for 19%.

District 1 will have a new JP after Mark Simino beat Justin Rose. Simino had 52 votes for 57%, and Rose ended up with 40 votes for 43%.

Incumbent JP Adam Cooper lost his seat for District 8 to Doug Harber. The challenger had 65 votes for 70%, and Cooper finished with 28 votes for 30%.

Hank Sherrell will stay on the quorum court for District 3. Sherrell had 47 votes for 65%, and challenger Samuel Guiltner had 25 votes for 35%.

District 6 JP Justin Thornton won his reelection bid on Tuesday. Thornton had 66 votes for 58% to beat out Seth Engelhardt with 48 votes for 42%.

Incumbent JP Rich Emmens will stay on the quorum court for District 9. Emmens had 133 votes for 68% to defeat Abranda Stephens with 64 votes at 32%.

In addition, Brett Stevenson beat Eric Brantner in the races for New Hope constable. Stevenson had 22 votes for 65% over Branter’s 12 votes for 35%.

SEARCY COUNTY

One Republican primary on the Searcy County Quorum Court will need a runoff, and the incumbent will not be included. Debbie Loggains with 68 votes at 39% will face off April 2 against Brian Ragland with 60 votes at 34% in the race for District 6. Incumbent Tim Hinkle had 48 votes at 27%.

Incumbent JP Danny Loggins will keep his seat on District 4 with 121 votes for 74%. Challenger Phillip McAdams had 43 votes for 26%.

James “Matt” Smith won the Republican primary for District 3 with 77 votes at 56%. Daniel A. Terhest had 61 votes for 44%.

STONE COUNTY

In Stone County, Republican incumbent JP Jim Bullard will keep his seat in District 1 with no opponent in November. Bullard had 175 votes for 63% to beat challenger Darren Ray Waddles with 104 votes for 37%.

Current District 4 JP Jason Kocher won his reelection bid with 146 votes for 62%. He beat Republican challenger Heidi Myers with 91 votes for 38%.

Republican Ronald Clark will remain as the District 5 JP with 141 votes for 55%. Challenger Lori A. Smith had 114 votes for 45%.

Mark Allen Davis won the Republican primare for the District 6 JP seat with 142 votes for 59% to beat out Kenny Swafford with 100 votes for 41%. Davis will face independent Delano Huff in November. Current JP Seth Templin did not run for reelection.

Neal Harness will be the new JP for District 8 with 151 votes for 84%. Elijah L. Joers had 28 votes for 16%. Harness will success John Dawson Irvin, who did not run for reelection.

Lisa Freshler Murphy won the Republican race for District 8 constable by one vote. Murphy had 86 votes over James Barnes with 85.

BOONE COUNTY

One Republican primary for the Boone County Quorum Court will require a runoff as Danny Hickman and Kyle Evatt will square off April 2 for District 5. Hickman had 219 votes for 46%, and Evatt had 140 votes for 29%. Chris Diffey was third with 122 votes at 25%.

Matt Odom defeated incumbent District 1 JP Jim Milum in the Republican primary. Odom had 189 votes for 57%, and Milum finished with 141 votes for 43%.

District 4 JP Bryan Snavely won his primary race for District 4. Snavely had 209 votes for 62%, and challenger Derek Moore had 128 votes for 38%.

Current District 4 JP Sam Tinsley easily won his Republican primary with 417 votes at 89%. Aubrey Ralls had 50 votes for 11%.

Incumbent Ralph Guynn won his Republican primary for District 9 JP with 255 votes for 59%. Cindy Dickey finished with 179 votes for 41%.

Dale Anderson was able to win the race for Position 2 on the Bergman School Board. Anderson had 403 votes for 61% to beat Jacob Crawford with 261 votes at 39%.
