The state championship games for Arkansas high school basketball began Thursday in downtown Hot Springs, and three area teams were featured in the Class 3A games.

The Salem girls’ quest to repeat as state champs came up short. Bergman won their second title in three years as they defeated the Lady Greyhounds 56-33. Marleigh Sellars led Salem with 12 points, and Callie Hall grabbed 10 rebounds. For the Lady Panthers, Taryn Holt scored 15 points, Savannah Ketchum had 12 points and was one rebound short of a double double, Kiersten Lowery added 10 points, and Ruby Trammell was named the tournament’s most valuable player. The Lady Greyhounds end the season at 30-7, and Bergman ends up 42-3.

Bergman did not fare as well in the boys’ game. For the second straight year, the Panthers came up short as Central Arkansas Christian pulled away for the 57-47 victory. Bergman was led by Dylan Friend with 24 points. Sam Maddox and Lane Baxter each provided 16 points for the Mustangs. Maddox was the tournament MVP. The Panthers wrap up the year with a mark of 33-11. CAC’s final record is 27-5.
