Three killed, one injured when car leaves highway, becomes submerged in Lake Norfork

Three people were killed and one flown to a Springfield hospital for treatment after a car left a highway north of Mountain Home and became submerged in Lake Norfork Wednesday afternoon.
Although the accident is under investigation by the Arkansas State Police and no official report has been released, family members of those involved in the accident have released the names of those involved in the accident on social media.

Killed in the crash was 23-year-old Savannah Burton of Mountain Home and two of her children, seven-year-old Londyn Cooney and six-month-old Sydney Steele. Injured and taken to Mercy Hospital in Springfield was Burton’s other child, two-year-old Paris Cooney.

The accident happened when Burton’s vehicle left State Highway 201 near the Pigeon Creek bridge and went into Lake Norfork shortly after noon.No other details about the accident have been released.

Emergency responders from the Clarkridge Volunteer Fire Department; Baxter County Sheriff’s Office, including their dive team; Baxter Health; and Arkansas State Police assisted at the scene.

Londyn was a first grader at Nelson Wilks Herron Elementary School in Mountain Home. The school has announced they have visited with the families of her classmates and will have lots of counseling support on campus Thursday.
