Sowbug Roundup to begin Thursday at Baxter County Fairgrounds

One of the biggest events for fly-fishing enthusiasts returns to the Twin Lakes Area this coming week. The North Arkansas Fly Fishers will host the 26th-annual Sowbug Roundup Thursday through Saturday from 9 to 4 at the Baxter County Fairgrounds.

Mike Tipton and Tommy Hagan of the North Arkansas Fly Fishers were recent guests of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM, and they said there will be several activities during the three-day period.

The theme for this year’s event is “The Elegant Wet Fly.” Davy Wotton is this year’s guest of honor. Wotton, originally from Wales, has been a long-time area resident and an expert on the arts and science of fly fishing the traditional wet fly.

In addition, another special guest will be Tim Flagler, the owner of Tightline Productions, L.L.C., a video production company located in Califon, N.J. Flagler is a well-known fly-tying instructor, and his YouTube channel currently has over 112,000 subscribers and 36 million views. He and Wotton are scheduled to have a tie-off as they will be tying the Classic March Brown Traditional Wet Wing Fly.

The Sowbug Roundup is the North Arkansas Fly Fishers’ only fundraiser of the year. Tipton says one item proceeds will benefit is college scholarships.

According to Hagan, last year’s event attracted visitors from 36 different states. He says this event is also a boost to the local economy.

The entry fee is $10 for all three days, but if an adult is accompanied by a child ages 11-and-under, they are admitted free. For more information, visit northarkansasflyfishers.org.
