Since the Baxter County Library opened its doors in 1953, it has been more than just a location that provides books to the community. Currently known as the Donald W. Reynolds Library serving Baxter County, it offers educational, as well as cultural, programming and exhibits for all ages.

Library director Kim Crow-Sheaner and foundation coordinator Adeana Estoll will be Tuesday’s guests of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM. Crow-Sheaner says she sees the library as a destination and a community hub.

The library looks to accomplish that goal of getting children to read through the Baxter County Library Early Literacy Project. The library collaborates with the Mountain Home, Cotter and Norfork school districts, the Schliemann Center for Women’s Health and Arkansas State University-Mountain Home to equip children with the literacy skills they need to be prepared to start kindergarten.

When it comes to the library’s funding, approximately 57-to-58% is from property taxes, and 30% comes from the library foundation. As a result, donations to the foundation are crucial to its operation. Estoll and Crow-Sheaner say one way to show financial support is to become a “Library Lover.”

The Donald W. Reynolds Library is celebrating National Library Week, which started Monday and continues through Saturday. They have several activities for the week, and Crow-Sheaner has a request for anyone taking part in any of the activities.
