The ASU-Mountain Home won Friday’s series opener in walkoff fashion. Jason Young’s RBI double pushed the Trailblazers past Southern Arkansas University Tech 8-7 at Cooper Park.
ASU-Mountain Home got the scoring started in the first inning on an RBI single by Sammy Lemond. After the Rockets took their first lead in the top of the second, the Blazers went back on top in the bottom half when Christopher Tillery hit a sacrifice fly, and Lemond drove in a run on a lineout. SAU Tech retook the lead in the fourth in a pair of RBI walks. Tillery hit another sacrifice fly later in the inning to tie the game at four. The game was knotted at 7-7 going into the bottom of the ninth when Gabriel Ellison reached on a double and scored on Lemond’s game winning double.
Trenton Smith picked up the victory as he pitched 1 1/3 relief innings, struck out one batter and gave up no hits, no walks and no runs. Deuce Yaksick was ASU-Mountain Home’s starting pitcher with 3 1/3 innings, four strikeouts, four hits, four runs, three earned runs and three walks. Trent Jordan pitched 4 1/3 relief innings, recorded nine strikeouts and gave up three hits, three runs and two walks.
Ellison led the Blazers by going 3-for-5 at the plate, Lemond was 2-for-5 with a pair of stolen bases, Tillery was 1-for-2 with three RBIs, and Young and Logen Walker each drew two walks.
ASU-Mountain Home improves to 24-10 on the season, and they’ll wrap up the three-game series with the Rockets by playing a doubleheader Saturday at Cooper Park. The first game at Lester White Field begins at noon.
