It was a horse from Arkansas who brought a dramatic finish to the most exciting two minutes in sports at the 150th Kentucky Derby this past Saturday. One local man’s connection to the owners of the winning horse, Mystik Dan, brought him pride in seeing a longtime friend edge out the win with a three nose at the wire win.
The winning owners are cousins Lance and Brent Gasaway and Daniel Hamby III, all from Arkansas. Mike Stockton, local financial advisor with Financial Services & Investment Stategies Inc. in Mountain Home, shared with Kim Szecsi on KTLO’s morning show during the morning stock update how Brent Gasaway and him were good friends throughout high school and played baseball together. Stockton says at a young age Gasaway and him where visiting horse tracks in Lousiana together.

Stockton says the Gasaway’s have come about their success from a lifetime of hard work.

In an interview with the Associated Press Sharilyn Gasaway, Brent’s wife, said, “It is surreal for sure. We feel like we’re just ordinary people and we’ve got an amazing horse.”
Mystik Dan, an 18-1 shot, edged Sierra Leone by a nose, with Forever Young another nose back in third at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
