The City of Mountain Home Water Department is reminding customers of Arkansas Plumbing Code and City Ordinance 92-019 which requires those to have a backwater valve if plumbing fixtures are below the top of the first upstream manhole on their street.

Water department officials state having a backwater valve installed is encouraged, even if a resident does not meet the mandatory criteria. A properly operating backwater valve allows the flow to go only in one direction, preventing wastewater from entering a residence or building during regular sewer system maintenance or an inadvertent sewer system backup.

If sewage does back up into a residence or building, officials state the City of Mountain Home cannot held liable for damages. Residents should check their plumbing plans or consult with a professional plumber to see if they have a backwater valve installed.
