Taylor High School was able to successfully defend its Class 1A state championships in baseball and softball Thursday the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.
The Tigers’ baseball team won its third straight and seventh overall title after breezing past Greers Ferry West Side 10-2 at Bear Stadium. Waylon Woodell picked up the win on the mound as he pitched four innings, struck out five batters and gave up seven hits, two walks and two earned runs. Woodell also performed well at the plate as he went 2-for-2, drew three walks and scored three runs. Austin Aycock was named the most valuable player as he was 2-for-3, was hit by two pitches, scored two runs and drove in three more.
For the Eagles, Brooks Hipp went 2-for-3, drew a walk and scored a run; Channer Smith was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI; and Ty Hewitt went 1-for-4 and drove in a run.
Taylor ends its season with a record of 23-4. West Side ends up falling to 27-4.
Taylor’s softball team secured its seventh consecutive state championship as they invoked the mercy rule in the sixth inning with a 10-0 win over Scranton.
Lady Tigers’ pitcher Ayla Buford was named the MVP. She pitched all six innings, recorded five strikeouts and gave up two hits and one walk. Buford was also 1-for-3 at the plate with a sacrifice fly, a run and two RBIs.
Also for Taylor, Heidi May went 1-for-3, provided a sacrifice bunt, was hit by a pitch, scored a run and drove in two more; Reese Fowler was 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs and an RBI; Lily Sewell went 1-for-1, hit three sacrifice bunts, drew two walks, scored two runs and drove in another; Macy Downs was 1-for-3 with two RBIs; and Ashlyn Clark went 1-for-3, scored a run and drove in another.
For the Rockets, Katei VonderHeide and DeLaney Mainer led the way as they were both 1-for-3.
The Lady Tigers wrap up the year at 26-2. Scranton drops to 15-11.
