Mansfield beats Riverside in 8 innings for Class 2A state softball championship

Mansfield’s softball team won its first state championship in more than a decade. The Lady Tigers needed an extra inning, but they were able to use a three-run eighth inning to defeat Riverside 4-2 in the Class 2A game.

Mansfield pitcher Alyson Edwards was named the most valuable player as she went the distance, recorded 15 strikeouts and gave up three hits, five walks and one earned run. Offensively, she drew five walks and scored a run.

Also for the Lady Tigers, Ambria Whittaker was 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs; Trinity Triska drew two walks, scored a run and drove in another; and Shelbie Fuller went 1-for-3, drew a walk and scored a run.

For the Lady Rebels, Klaire Womack was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI, Annalee Qualls drew a walk and scored both runs, and Kaylee Cox went 1-for-4 and drove in a run.

Mansfield concludes its season at 24-1. Riverside falls to 27-2.
