National Poppy Day has been recognized in the United States ever since the American Legion Family asked Congress to designate it for the Friday before Memorial Day. Starting Friday and continuing through the remainder of the weekend, the Alley-White American Legion Auxiliary Unit 52 will hold a drive at Town and Country Supermarket in Mountain Home to distribute red poppies for residents and visitors to wear in honor the fallen and in support of the living who have worn the country’s military uniforms.

Alley-White Auxiliary Unit poppy chairwoman Nancy Stang was a recent guest of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM. She says the distribution of the silk poppies is a tradition dating back to World War I.

Stang says over the years, Town and Country has been hospitable to the local American Legion and Auxiliary, and they’ve received assistance from others in distributing poppies.
