It was 1865 when the Salvation Army was founded in London. William Booth began the organization, originally named “The Christian Mission,” to help those considered poor, vulnerable and destitute. Since then, the Salvation Army has amassed nearly 1.5 million members in 133 countries, and one of its locations can be found on Arkansas Highway 201 North in Mountain Home.
The Salvation Army has numerous programs to help those in need. They offer emergency financial aid for utility bills, housing expenses and other necessary expenses. The organization also assists with emergency disaster services by mobilizing its officers, employees and volunteers to provide vital services including food, emotional care and spiritual care to those affected by disasters.
Other services include shelter for those requiring a place to sleep and help to others looking to stay in their residences. The Salvation Army also looks to fight food insecurity with client-choice food pantries and nightly community meals.
The holiday season is always a busy time for the Salvation Army. Red kettles can be seen in various locations beginning in November and continuing through Christmas. In addition, the Angel Tree is a way for volunteers to provide gifts for local youth who may otherwise may not expect presents on Christmas.
The Salvation Army Corps Officer Major Michelle Robbins will be a guest on an upcoming edition of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM. She says donations are always welcome, but they’re also in need of volunteers.
