Unemployment numbers rise in May in north central Arkansas, southern Missouri

The latest unemployment numbers from the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services and the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center show May’s unemployment rates in north central Arkansas and southern Missouri counties rose when compared April.

In Baxter County, the rate increased from 3.5% in April to 3.7% in May. Baxter County’s rate is tied for the 39th lowest out of Arkansas’ 75 counties. There are 623 unemployed Baxter County residents out of a work force of 17,063.

Marion County’s rate went up from 3.9% in April to 4% in May, ranking it as tied for the 49th lowest in the state. Marion County has 235 residents out of work from a work force of 5,940.

Fulton County’s unemployment rate rose from 3.4% in April to 3.5% in May, which means they are tied for the 24th lowest rate in the state. Fulton County has a labor force of 4,561 and 160 are unemployed.

The unemployment rate in Izard County stayed the same from April to May at 4.4%, which has them tied for number 61 out of 75 counties in Arkansas. There are 204 Izard County residents unemployed out of a work force of 4,616.

In Stone County, the rate increased from 3.6% in April to 3.9% in May. That ranks Stone County tied for 45th in the state. There are 4,640 in the labor force in Stone County with 182 unemployed.

Searcy County’s unemployment rate moved up from 3.8% to 3.9% in May, ranking them tied for 45th in Arkansas. There are 115 people unemployed in Searcy County out of a work force of 2,913.

Boone County saw its rate move up from 3.2% in April to 3.3% in May, putting them in a tie for the 17th lowest rate in the state. Boone County has a work force of 15,904 with 517 out of work.

Newton County is tied for the state’s 24th lowest unemployment rate at 3.5%, the same as the previous month. Newton County has a labor force of 3,192 with 111 of those unemployed.

Arkansas’ unemployed rate in May was 3.4%, the same as the previous month.

In southern Missouri, Ozark County’s rate had a rise from 5% in April to 5.7% in May. Ozark County has 203 unemployed out of a work force of 3,564.

Douglas County saw its rate go up from 3.5% in April to 4.3% in May. In Douglas County, the labor force is 5,336, and there are 232 out of work.

Howell County’s rate went up from 4% to 4.9% in May. Howell County has work force of 16,272 with 795 unemployed.

Taney County’s rate had a rise, going from 4.2% in April to 4.6% in May. There are 1,249 unemployed in Taney County out of a labor force of 26,861.

Missouri’s rate increased from 3.2% in April to 3.9% in May.
