102 year-old WWII veteran to speak at Historical Society meeting Tuesday

The Baxter County Historical Society will hold their monthly meeting Tuesday night at 6 in the Knox Room at the Donald W. Reynold Library serving Baxter County.

The meeting will feature two speakers. Hollie Scoma, the Arkansas Womens Veteran Coordinator, and Women’s Army Corps Tech Sgt. Edith Mitchell, a 102-year-old veteran who served in World War II (WWII).

Sonny Sharp from the Baxter County Historical Society, says the presentation should be a lot of fun.

Scoma is a U.S. Air Force veteran with 15 years active duty service. In 2011, she deployed to Balad Air Force Base in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. She was redeployed from 2011 to 2012 to Al Jabber Air Force Base in Qatar in support of Operation New Dawn.

As the State Women’s Veteran Coordinator, Scoma develops outreach providing support, education, resources and advocacy to more than 20,000 Arkansas women veterans. Scoma and her family live in Mountain Home.

Mitchell enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) on September 1, 1943. At 102, She is the oldest living female WWII veteran in Arkansas. After boot camp in the “swamps” outside Daytona Beach, she became a Chaplain’s assistant at Camp Stoneman, Cal., a staging area for troops headed for the pacific. Musically talented, she performed at Catholic, Protestant and Jewish chapel services and continued to minister throughout her military career. She rose to the rank of Tech Sgt. 5. After leaving the Army in 1946, Edith used her G.I. Bill benefits to earn a Master Degree in voice and music at Columbia University.

The meeting is free and open to the public.
