A Missouri man has been arrested after he hitchhiked to Mountain Home with his clothes and two dogs and wound up attacking his ex-girlfriend. The incident Saturday afternoon has led to several charges against 38-year-old Cody James Hastings of Republic.
According to the probable cause affidavit from the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy responded to a 911 call on County Road 310 southeast of Mountain Home of a physical domestic disturbance.
The deputy made contact with the female victim and Hastings began yelling at and rushed her. The deputy told Hastings to stay back and Hastings told the deputy “…I will do whatever I want.”
The deputy reported Hastings was highly agitated and appeared to be under the influence of something. Hastings again rushed at the victim and was taken into custody. He was placed into the patrol car and as the deputy was closing the door, Hastings lunged to try to get out and hit the top of his head on the window guard bars inside the car, cutting the top of his head.
The victim told an investigator she used to be in a relationship with Hastings but they broke up in March and he moved to Missouri. He showed up at her house a few days earlier after hitchhiking from Missouri and had gotten upset after finding a man’s shirt and the two had gotten into an argument. She told the investigator she asked him several times to leave but he would not.
The victim stated she had gone into the bathroom and Hastings grabbed her by the throat for a few seconds. The investigator noted a faint bruise on her neck. She also said she had tried to leave and Hastings had grabbed her arm to keep her from starting her car.
Hastings is facing a felony charge of aggravated assault on a family or household member along with misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He also faces a penalty enhancement for being a habitual offender as he has two previous felony convictions. He is being held in the Baxter County Detention Center on bonds totaling $25,000.
