The Arkansas Legislative Council will review a funding request to set aside $1.2 million for enhanced security for Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders when they meet today. This comes after the Council’s Performance Evaluation and Expenditure Review Committee advanced the measure on Tuesday.

KARK News reports Senate President Bart Hester (R-Cave Springs) said the money would provide bulletproof vests for detail staff and equipment upgrades to the governor’s mansion. Hester noted there being an increased need during the current administration.

“Governor Sanders has had more credible threats against her life this year than the last maybe two, or three or four all put together,” Hester said.

Hester clarified that the one-time funding increase is an approved use under the grant, which has provided money for state police needs in the past. He also noted that the federal money needed to be spent before the end of the year.
