An accident is currently being investigated by the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office after a vehicle crashed near the dam at Greer’s Ferry Lake on Sunday.

According to the incident report, the accident happened near the JFK Park Overlook near the dam along Highway 25.

Deputies were dispatched to the dam just before 10 Sunday Morning after OnStar reported a crash. Upon their arrival, they reported finding a vehicle at the bottom of the dam’s eastern side by the Little Red River and a damaged fence on the overlook.

In a statement by Sheriff Chris Brown, he says investigators determined the vehicle went through the fence and overturned, hitting the dam slope before eventually coming to a rest at the bottom.

The driver, identified as 30-year-old Ismael Ponce of Clarksville, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, a 28-year-old female who’s identity has not been released, was airlifted to Little Rock in stable but critical condition.

Investigators have still not revealed the cause of the crash.
